Why?

Why do some people wear shoes indoors?

I found this question on Ask Metafilter, my favourite site for answering all the questions I've never asked. Before I read this question, I didn't even know that some people wear shoes inside their dwellings. I'm baffled! I totally thought it was a tv/movie thing to wear shoes inside. I never wear shoes inside!! Do you?

I like people to wear shoes at my home because it is part of being dressed and I like my guests to be fully dressed. I like to wear my shoes at other people's homes because when I have carefully chosen my outfit including the appropriate shoes I don't like to be greeted by a host who asks me to remove my shoes any more than a host who asks me to remove any other part of my ensemble. Would you ask a guest to remove his pants? or her jewellery?

Lynda,

I don't wear shoes in my apartment, or in my house when I'm at home. Also... when I'm home, I don't wear shoes outside half the time (in the summer). I find it's almost impolite to wear shoes in someone else's house... I almost always take my shoes off in someone else's house, unless I'm just standing in the doorway for a short amount of time. I wouldn't want to make a mess in someone else's house and hope they would feel the same upon entering mine. :)

When I was younger and my sister would have parties at our house I would mix everyone's shoes up and then knot them all together into one big long string of shoes. For some reason they were never very amused... So bratty siblings is perhaps one reason to wear shoes indoors.

I wear indoor flipflops in my apartment to keep my feet from freezing on the tile, but still bare since I love going without socks! But that's changing.. I'm discovering that the practice of wearing shoes in the house is alive and well in rural PEI! It might be something about old farmhouses with no carpet and the kitchen being an extension of the barn? (I don't know...) But I do know that when outdoor shoes come inside, it's a good idea to leave yours on as well.
